Prof. Rafael Frankel,1922-1999, was a leading plant geneticist and plant breeder. He was born in Beuthen, Germany in 1922, and immigrated to Israel in 1937. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the University of California, at Davis and obtained his Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel . He led plant genetic research for 42 years, at the Argriculture Research Organization, Volcani Center in Israel and was active also in other countries. He achieved international recognition as one of the foremost scientists in the field of plant genetics and breeding.
He developed new understanding in molecular and plant genetics, as well as effective applications of innovative plant breeding approaches (particularly in tomatoes) with emphasis on modern arid agriculture.
